they invented some things long time ago, they're called shoes. cheapest form of transportation around. and if you are walking, you can also stick out your thumb, and eventually somebody will pull over and give you a ride. the locals like giving rides to white people

The most important thing to do is book in advance and do a lot of comparison shopping. When searching for internet car rental specials, you can also try to check car rental rates using a discount code. There are hundreds of membership programs and professional associations that offer car rental discount codes to their members. You can find a list of car rental discount codes for 8 major car rental companies, at http://www.best-car-rental-tips.com/disc…
You can also check to see if your sister can get a cheaper local rate (sometimes car rental companies offer great deals to local renters) and sign you on as an additional driver. Make sure to check if the extra charge for the additional driver would cancel out the local savings.
Good luck, and hope this helps!

On Oahu, I usually rent from Alamo. It is not on site, but a mile or so away down the Nimitz towards town, but there is a shuttle bus that comes every 10-15 minutes like all the other rental agencies. The cars are GM cars though, and not the greatest quality or best shape, but prices way down for weekly rentals. If you have a Costco membership, go to their website and click on "Travel" and select car rentals, then select Alamo. You get a 20% discount plus they always have special deals (make sure you allow pop-ups from the costco page or I find the web site doesn't work very well). I was getting $180/week for an intermediate, but compacts and sub-compacts were even cheaper.
Don't be misled by the "daily rate", as they all have different add-ons and taxes that basically doubles it. If you go on Travelocity or Expedia they display the "true rate" which is $20-$25/day.
Enterprise is usually the cheapest, but it was always a strange "hyped" experience when I used them, so I have never tried them in the islands.

I'm going to Kona too this Sat for a week. Some of the places I've visited on previous trips are White sands beach south of Kona village, Kekaha Kai State park which has a really nice, large beach, Volcanoe national park, Akaka Falls on the Hilo side of the island, ect...
Volcanoes National Park is really cool and you can walk through volcano craters and there is a spot you can drive to where you can watch lava flow into the ocean, going around sunset is best. Also going to some of the really big resorts is fun, especially the Waikaloa resort, it's huge and there is plenty to see and do there. Go snorkeling, scuba diving, or fishing on a boat. There are shops and resturants in downtown Kona. Take a drive to the other side of the island to Hilo or the northern section and check out all of the sites there.
If you want to do cheap dining the best way is to rent a condo/vacation rental and just make food there. My dad has a condo there and that is usually what we do instead of eating out every night.
